worms [20 Oct 2006|02:38pm]
I am buying some worms today. (I told Norbu that he was finally getting a pet. He wasn't amused.) Food waste is one of the biggest garbage problems for NYC to tackle at the moment. Overall household trash production has decreased over the years, but there's always progress to be made. My worms will eat food, coffee grounds, tea bags (minus the staples), soiled paper napkins, newspapers and all kinds of other stuff. The end result? Dirt. Brand new dirt which can then be "harvested" after three to six months. The worm's food shouldn't include leftovers or dairy to avoid creating smells (or meat, either, if that's something you've got in your house) and the fruits and vegetables should be washed (including things like banana peels) and then covered in the worm bin to avoid attracting fruit flies. Oh, and you've got to mist things down with a spray bottle. The worms like it to be a little humid.

Padma isn't crazy about the worm thing, but he was being a brat yesterday so I decided to follow my heart and not discuss the issue. He put the ventilation holes in my worm bin last night. This morning he said, "I just want you to know that I am not crazy about the worm thing, but I've done some bad things lately so I'm going to let it go. I just wanted to let you know how I feel since we're honest with each other."

I said, "Normally I would have asked you, but the way you were acting yesterday I decided to just make my own decision." I then agreed to get rid of the worms if they escape. (I said I'd give them away--there's gotta be some other granola eater out there just waiting for a ready made worm bin.) He said if they escape we're not waiting for someone to pick them up. They're just out. I figure since I'm keeping them in the cupboard under the sink that if they start to escape he won't know right away, so I should still be able to put an ad up on the infamous Craig's List to find them a home.

I know you were all dying for this information.

poverty + disability = cooking, baking, & too much time on my hands [14 Oct 2006|11:40am]
All vegan, all scratch, all the time. (All my cookbooks are vegan.)    Lots of whole grains and turbinado sugar.

Pumpkin Biscuits
"Buttermilk" Biscuits
Lemon Poppyseed Scones (As per Norbu's request.)
Carob Chip Cookies (Never would I have ever predicted that I would intentionally add carob to anything after that first time I tasted carob as a child!  Best not baked when visiting with Steve, although Steve appreciates them so much that any overcrisping due to leaving them in the oven too long out of sheer paranoia that they will be undercooked is easily overlooked.  Note: Carob seems to char a bit more easily than chocolate.  Maybe because it has less fat?)
Mashed Potatoes
Yeast Gravy
Fries
White Sweet Potato Fries (referred to as "White" fries so that Norbu will eat them)
Matzoh Ball Soup  (Yum, yum, yummy!)
Noodle Soup (I kind of messed that one up. Sad.)

epiphany [14 Oct 2006|11:32am]
"I had an epiphany last night," he said.

"Was it about me?" I asked.

"Sort of.  I came in here and realized that the pasta still needed their lids put on.  I opened up the cupboard and looking for the lids and saw the matching containers and then found the lids beneath them.  I realized how frustrating it would have been if I had opened up the cupboard and there hadn't been any lids that fit."

I smiled, pleased.  "Now you know how I feel, huh?"  He nodded and returned my smile.

random bullshit that makes me happy [07 Aug 2006|06:18pm]
1. My new 2-gig USB key provided by my employer really does make life easier, and free is good.

2. Despite recently learning that carrot cake and cinnamon rolls are two of the most unhealthy foods on the planet, I had a cinnamon roll today.  It was delectable.  Cinnamony goodness, oh my!

3. I had the opportunity to organize a little chatting meet-up with some of my best friends, some of whom were nine time zones apart from one another!  It was a really neat experience for me.

4. Uh, I can't think of anything else, but I know that there's more.  That counts, doesn't it?

I was just eating a Tootsie Pop and asked Clarity if he knew what they were.  He said that he didn't and I had to go looking for that commercial.  Here's the link for those of you who need a trip down memory lane: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHKbbv7k88Q

The man working behind the counter seems to have forgotten to put the hummus in my hummus sandwich.  Tahini, lettuce, and tomato just wasn't the same.

Where am I? [08 Jun 2006|08:31am]
My banana girl sent me an IM yesterday asking where I am.  Well, banana girl, I am one hour further from you and one hour closer to Clarity: Halifax, Nova Scotia.

For those of you wondering what has become of my website, it should be back online soon.  The hosting company shut my site off when the credit card that they bill wouldn't go through, which it wouldn't because I had to replace it when I recently lost my wallet.  I was sent an email stating that they had attempted to bill me for a month.  Why, then, didn't they send an email BEFORE they shut off my access?  Time to switch hosts.  What a pain. :(

Halifax is quite lovely.  It reminds me of a mishmash of Bristol/Thornbury, the Pacific Northwest, and Massachussets.  I believe it would be a lovely place to live for a small town, which is good to know because if I ever leave New York, I want to end up in a very Shambhala Buddhist city.  Either that, or Paris.  (I'm going to have to work on my metric system skills.)

I am attempting to motivate myself to exercise soon.

Oh, and I miss my boyfriend terribly.  If he and I were any more codependent, we'd definitely be attached at the hip.  As ridiculous as it sounds, I have never felt as strongly about anyone as I feel about him.

http://www.silive.com/news/advance/index.ssf?/base/news/1148995023124850.xml&coll=1

The article says he was only shot three times as opposed to five.  They must have found more wounds in his arm during his surgery.

Dear Eesa,

I saw a schploo today. It was the regular mini schploo size but it was colored like a beagle. It was the cutest schploo ever! Naturally I thought of you.

Love,
Dagme

it's hard to believe... [16 Mar 2006|02:31pm]
I know, it's hard to believe but I've always wanted a melon baller. I was reminded of how very much so I desire yet another kitchen gadget whilst browsing over at Vegan Lunch Box. I mean hell, wouldn't a melon baller go nicely with my new pineapple slicer?

I went shopping at Laptop Lunches after my first visit to Vegan Lunch Box this afternoon. I just couldn't help myself.

The man [sees] the woman as a goddess
The woman [sees] the man as a god.
By joining the diamond scepter and lotus,
They should make offerings to each other.
There is no worship apart from this.
